Spending the next 3 days learning further about all things Buy and Sell Websites. Looking forward to sharpening my saw on the skill set I am nurturing and developing and enjoying. Sometimes you just have to DO to work it out!

Fortunately, during your time as a Broker, you come across people who get it!
By that I mean, there is no education component required in order for them to understand what you’re revealing.
And what a pleasure that is when it happens…

Had a meeting on Wednesday with a well-established Business Advisor. As usual, there was a few things on the agenda, one of which was the introduction of a business we have for sale. The reason was because I had seen this particular chap present a keynote recently and what he spoke of is how we want to sell this business. Hence the invitation for a coffee and a chat.

Much to our collective delight, he could see what we are trying to achieve and on first glance, is prepared to work in with us to get a mutually beneficial outcome. Happy days!

It’s all systems go! Advertisement is ready to fire.  This is a cracker for a white-collar wanting to get out of the office or a trade wanting to get off the tools. Given how close to end-of-financial-year it is, we’re going to wait a few weeks, get the 2014 numbers done and then go to market.

The Linkedin campaign commenced sourcing and contacting larger agencies. Some have said thanks but no thanks. Otherwise have accepted the preliminary information but nothing else as yet. And others haven’t responded at all.  Next phase will be going to our “referral network”. What will next week bring?

Contacted key players, the largest of which has put their hand up. It’s all rather good timing in so far as their next Board meeting is Sunday, so the Business Profile has already been provided, in readiness.

Training provider
Assisting colleague by introducing the perfect buyer for his selling client. However, due to their own growth plans, this has been placed on the back burner. Vendor has given all-clear to 3 private parties who have indicated interest, with another 2 more in the wings. IMs have been sent.

Health Care Provider
Assisting colleague by introducing the Home Help interested party to their client, now that the authority has been signed. As it turns out, the offer out of nowhere was being used as their first step in the process. Unfortunately for the prospective buyer, it’s way off the mark and that’s because they listened to their accountant who clearly doesn’t understand the business buying/selling process. They’ve been invited in to discuss the issue but so far no response.

Started some of the renovation of the transferred website this week, with more to come. Best way is to step this out anyway, given I want to know what works and what doesn’t. I won’t know that if I do it all at once will I? Yes, I do need to double the numbers first off, to make it worth continuing the process, but systematically and consistently is the way to go.

Yet again this week, I spent time with two business owners, both complaining about the situation they’ve found themselves in. One, bought into a franchise that appears to be making it up as they go along. Not a bad thing in some respects given they will at least trial things and are not to set in their ways, yet! Means the employees of the franchisor are working really hard to rein it back in and keep a lid on all that’s being asked. Be interesting to see how this one pans out.

The other is a business owner of over 40 years, where the bum has fallen out of its market. Sad? Yes. The superannuation payout as dreamt? No. Alas, but what’s that we find? Items of significant historical value I hear you cry. Ready to sell to the right bidder. Perfect! Might just realise more than ever thought possible when selling the business as such. Now time to spend cataloguing what is valuable and get ready to go to market. As for the business, if the sale of these items come off as foreseen, then the business can close its doors in 18 months and all will be well with the world. Again, time will tell…

This week, I bought a website!

Great domain name.
Both dotcom and dotcom.au versions in included.
Already channeling “uniques” and $$ (small numbers at this stage but great berth)
A delightful seller, willing to assist with the transfer (although my techies are good to go whenever I make the call!)
All for less than $200.
Good shopping or what…

Really looking forward to the “renovation” part now, to get this little baby humming along nicely. Waiting for the tap on the shoulder from the few corporates that will want this. Time will tell on this strategy.

But even if they don’t, no matter. At this rate, the investment will be paid off under 12 months so the rest will be cream.

Gotta love that!

Still waiting on the revised figures. Since got confirmation that they don’t look as healthy as first intimated. Deciding whether to go back to the 4 interested parties, maybe there will be some interest regardless.

So the two parties have meet to sit down and nut it out. A 2 hour briefing covered off most of the pre-Due Diligence questions. We’ve got one more meeting with the potential buyer tomorrow. Be interesting to see what further questions are to be asked. Wondering if it might be an earnout conversation… Next week should see this move rather quickly.

Touched base with local competitors and two parties were interested enough to request and return the  CA, in readiness for receiving the Business Profile. Really want either of these two to be courageous enough to give it a go, as they at least understand the industry and the potential this one offers, especially as a bolt-on. Such corporate appeal, so untapped. Let’s see what their feedback is.

via Sellability Score. It’s all systems go! Awaiting on sign-off of IM and advertisement. Once done, we go to market. This is a cracker for a white-collar wanting to get out of the office or a tradie wanting to get off the tools.

Waiting on one final piece of information for the IM. Advertisement is good to go on the websites, so that will be arranged tomorrow. Looking forward to calling a few people I know about this one too, can see it slotting in very nicely.

The IM is taking somewhat longer than expected (which is most frustration!) but nonetheless, it is what it is. Hope to get that sorted by tomorrow as well.

This should be a no-brainer, expect with the vendor being particularly unhelpful, the Buyer is in the process of deciding what it’s worth to their business to buy as opposed to what it’s worth. This number is almost finalised, so hope to get it sorted shortly.

So this week saw me sitting with an Accountant, a Financial Planner and their clients, a Couple, talking all things “Sellability Score”.

Typically, these Small Business Owners had got some of it right and had neglected other parts that may have contributed more to the ongoing positioning of the business. Yet again, they didn’t know what they didn’t know!

Nor had they ever had their business dissected and presented in the way I did it on Wednesday i.e. with my Buyers Goggles on. The questions I asked, the altered slant on the same construct, the “salesmanship” (for use of a better word) around the business they had before them and what its future could hold from an outsiders perspective.

At intervals, I could almost detect renewed excitement that wasn’t there when we first started.

It will be interesting to see what comes of the meeting, once they finish talking to their “A” team and sleep on it over the weekend…

Assisting colleague by introducing the perfect buyer for his selling client. This should be a no-brainer, as long as the vendor is sensible, which is not always something we can guarantee! And this one is being particularly unhelpful so the Buyer will have to decide what it’s worth to their business to buy it as opposed to what it’s worth… be interesting to see where this ends up.

The following is a series of questions to help start your thinking around your Online Strategy. 

  • Does the Business currently have an online presence at all? If not, why not?
  • Is there a mapped out Online Strategy in place?
  • If yes, how old is it?
  • How well has it been executed?
  • If not yet and  it had to be executed immediately, does it make sense?
  • Is it addressing what really needs to be addressed?
  • If yes, what’s worked? what hasn’t?
  • What are you still doing that you shouldn’t be?
  • If selling is an option, does it appeal to a Buyer in its current form?
  • Is it set up to be able to “hand over” to a third party?
  • How are the online records (eg Google Anaytics) looking?
  • Does this reporting of the Business (e.g.: to the ATO) reflect its online “value”?
  • Where is the Online Strategy at right now vs. where does it want/intend to be?
  • If it relies solely on YOU, what steps need to be taken to reduce the risk/potential damage?
  • Is there the option to do both ie build/acquire to grow and then Exit once all in place?
  • Alternatively, is now the prime time to acquire an Online business to help fill gaps, if that’s possible?
  • If looking at a Buy option, will acquiring a website get the Business there more quickly?

In order for you to Start with the End in Mind TODAY, what has to happen?
Based on where the Business is now and what is wanted long-term, will determine the gaps to be filled.

So you have a website to sell.
You want to come and talk to me about it but you’re not sure about what’s involved.
Here’s what I will ask of you.

Apart from standard questions I ask, mainly around the history of the site, why it started, it’s story really, I will need to see the following to substantiate revenue/income and traffic/statistics:

  • screen shots of what you use to collect the monies
    for example: PayPal, Adsense, affiliates, etc
  • Screen shots or PDFs of the Google “Analytics” summary

Ideally these are for the duration that the site has been running.

With any of this information, please blacken out any personal details not relevant to me, like bank account details etc.

These are the basics required to ascertain what you’ve got and how you prove it.
