When is the right time to Sell your business?

ThinkingLady

Often I get asked about “when is the best to sell my business”? And how to do so?
The other important question, which is often not asked, is “when should I start to think about selling”?

In my experience, it is best to work backwards!
So, here are some of the thinking questions to consider:

• If selling, what asking price will be required when ready to execute?

• How far off is that, realistically?

* Are you prepared to hang in there until the price is reachable?

PLUS, and equally as important…

• What will you as the current Business Owner do post Exit?

• What will be the implications for business/life partners?

• If the Business is your “identity”, what then?

How to Exit? There are a number of possible Exit options e.g.

• Sell

• Management buy-in

• Family handover

• Partner buy-out

• Vendor finance

• Franchising

• IPO

• Pack up and walk away!

• Or any hybrid of above

When to Exit?

When you’re comfortable with where your business is at in addressing above.
Only then will you be ready to seek feedback from the market.

To make this happen, who needs to be involved? Do you have access to the following specialists in Exit?

• Trusted Advisors

• Accountant

• Banker

• Business Broker

• Business Advocate (if acquiring)

• Board member

• Franchising specialist

• PLUS identify who might be interested in buying the Business?

None of this has to be daunting! Setting YOU on the path of thinking about Starting with the End in Mind TODAY, regardless of how old the business is that a few of these questions will prompt may be enough.

However, if you’re serious about having this conversation, please contact me when you’re ready.

buy | sell websites; here’s what I need in order to pique my interest…

GoogleAnalytics

So you have a website to sell.
You want to come and talk to me about it but you’re not sure about what’s involved.
Here’s what I will ask of you.

Apart from standard questions I ask, mainly around the history of the site, why it started, it’s story really, I will need to see the following to substantiate revenue/income and traffic/statistics:

  • screen shots of what you use to collect the monies
for example: PayPal, Adsense, affiliates, etc
  • Screen shots or PDFs of the Google “Analytics” summary

Ideally these are for the duration that the site has been running.

With any of this information, please blacken out any personal details not relevant to me, like bank account details etc.

These are the basics required to ascertain what you’ve got and how you prove it.
Easy!

As the one particular sale has got to a major decision time, we’re now playing the waiting game! That said, there’s been plenty to keep me busy with a growing number of Business Owners exploring the sale option.

Again this week, I’ve had discussions about what constitutes an Online Business. Just because a Business Owner calls it so (and there’s many that do!) doesn’t mean others agree.

What’s your definition of an Online Business?
And while you’re at it, what about an Online Strategy?

You’ve only got to read my blog posts over the last weeks to understand what I mean when talking about both…

Continuing to spend much of this week working on one particular sale and exploring the sale option with a number of Business Owners keen to chat.

The discussion about what constitutes an Online Business is one I am continually having at the moment . Just because a Business Owner calls it so doesn’t mean others agree. What’s happened with the few I’ve spoken to this week, the business definitely has an online frontend but the backend is still being fulfilled manually, either by the owner or a contractor.

So, is that an Online Business or not?
Really?

buy | sell websites – what to do when you want to sell?

BuySell3

Email me!

This week I was introduced to two entrepreneurial mothers who have built neat little websites, with a form of eCommerce platform. In both cases, life circumstances have altered therefore informing them to do something other than their respective businesses.

Both made similar comments – “I was just going to shut it down if I couldn’t work out what to do with it. I had not even thought of selling until ____ (can’t reveal my sources!) mentioned it and now I’m really pleased to explore this as an option”

Excellent! so am I.

Too much time, effort and money have been invested in setting these businesses up. Yes, they are micro but they are still a representation of one business owners work and need to therefore be treated with the respect deserved.

In both cases, we have had preliminary discussions about what I’m looking for, to be able to analyse the best way forward. That includes relevance in niche, traffic stats, revenue generating options and success etc. (Not dissimilar to any business really, only with online, there is specific information required as well).

Once I do my analysis work, I will come back to each of them with a proposal and we’ll go from there.

Stay tuned!
