‘STATUSPHERE’ how and where your customers are finding their status fix…

The latest from trendwatching.com

Whatever industry you’re in, in the end, everything is about status. And since what constitutes status in consumer societies is fragmenting rapidly, like it or not, the need for recognition and status is at the heart of every consumer trend*. Status is the ultimate (hidden) motive, a subconscious but ever-present force.

Now, in a traditional consumer society, where consumption is one of the leading (if not the leading) indicators of success, those who consume the most (and especially those who consume the rarest and most expensive), will typically also attain the highest status. This is why brands have, for decades, gladly provided people with goods, services and experiences that help them (boldly or subtly) impress their peers and help alleviate their anxieties about how they’re perceived by others.

However, mature consumer societies are changing, and so is the ‘STATUSPHERE’: an increasing number of consumers are no longer (solely) obsessed with owning or experiencing the most and/or the most expensive. Our definition:

STATUSPHERE | As consumers are starting to recognize and respect fellow consumers who stray off the beaten consuming-more-than-thou-path, ‘new’ status can be about acquired skills, about eco-credentials, about generosity, about connectivity… All of this makes for a far more diversified ‘STATUSPHERE’ than most brands and organizations have traditionally catered to. Time to really figure out how and where your customers are now finding their status fix.

Abbott & Costello buying a computer….

I had to add this to the blog.
No, it’s not directly related to being an entrepreneurial mother but Yes, it could almost be a conversation I would be capable of having, only not as clever!
Besides which, it’s TOO good! I’m sure this IS what they would do if they were still here! If it doesn’t quite make sense or tickle you, then you are either too old or too young…sorry! Do yourself a favour and borrow a DVD or two of their work. Very clever…

For those of us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, or the people who know more about them than us, enjoy…

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch, ‘Who’s on First?’ might have turned out something like this:

COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT
ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: Thanks I’m setting up an office in my den and I’m thinking about buying a computer.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: No, the name’s Lou.

ABBOTT: Your computer?

COSTELLO: I don’t own a computer. I want to buy one.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: I told you, my name’s Lou.

ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO: I don’t know. What will I see when I look at the windows?

ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT: Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT: I just did.

COSTELLO: You just did what?

ABBOTT: Recommend something.

COSTELLO: You recommended something?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: For my office?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let’s just say I’m sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?

ABBOTT: Word.

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue ‘W’.

COSTELLO: I’m going to click your blue ‘w’ if you don’t start with some straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I can track my money with?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: That’s right. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What’s bundled with my computer?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT: Yes.. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn’t it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!

(A few days later)

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?

ABBOTT: Click on ‘START’……….…

Start Your Business?
Grow Your Business?
Sell Your Business?

I know these are often burning issues when combining motherhood and business. What I want to know is how I can best serve you around these key topics? I certainly have my own ideas on how I might do that e.g. to create the entrepreneurial mother™ “hub” (via the internet); to develop more checklists etc etc; but are they what will help you?

I go into some detail in the latest TEMplate, click here, and much of that has been based on your feedback to date; and now I want to know much more…

I look forward to hearing from you.

Inside the Grants Internet Business Workshop…

I have spent the last 4 days (with 300 of my closest friends) learning from some of the best in the business about the Internet and using it to market products for great chunks of cash! The main contributors to the workshop were Andrew and Daryl Grant pictured above, with yours truly. They were ably supported by a number of other contributors that make up their million dollar mind set faculty.

I have to tell you that the workshop was 4 days well spent. I will definitely be using the information to take the entrepreneurial mother to the next level. It’s going to be very exciting times ahead so I’ll update you as I go, here on the blog.

If you have any questions of me, you can always leave a comment or two! or alternatively drop me an email.

Half a Dozen Consumer Trends for 2009

December 2008 | Yup, it’s that time of the year again: time for endless predictions of what’s going to happen in 2009, most of which are rather dark and gloomy with economies around the world going downhill. Fortunately, there are still plenty of trends out there that are begging to be applied profitably, both now and long-term.

and they consist of…
1. “Nichetributes” (low cost, practical tributes to the zeitgeist)
2. “Luxyoury” (in 2009, YOU define what constitutes luxury)
3. “Feedback 3.0″ (think we’ve reached full transparency?)
4. “Econcierge” (savings are the new green)
5. “Mapmania” (why maps are the new interface)
6. “Happy Ending” (the silver lining of every downturn)

Well worth the continued read…Enjoy!

Note: This is trendwatching.com’s free end-of-year Trend Briefing, highlighting half a dozen consumer trends for 2009. For those of you who are truly, deeply into trends and crave dozens of trends, we recommend you check out our newly-released, 150+ page 2009 Trend Report. More here »

Small is Beautiful

Care of the Barefoot Investor; Scott Pape…I had to share this with you as he is making a lot of sense…

November 15, 2008
WITH world leaders running around spending billions – no, make that trillions – of dollars of our money in an effort to avert a global financial meltdown, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking your little stash of cash pales in comparison.

Rubbish. I know from personal experience that as little as a thousand bucks can change your life.

Coming up with a grand shouldn’t be too much of a stretch, especially if you’ve read and implemented a few suggestions from last week’s column. And if you didn’t, readers on my Herald Sun blog this week have added dozens more tight-ass tips.

Then again, if all else fails, the PM is playing Santa Claus this year so look for your cheque under the tree.

Let’s look at half a dozen ways where money can buy happiness.

* Pay off your debts
* Get some Mojo
* Best investment this year
* Start a web-based business
* Loose change legacy
* Change someone’s life

So, there you have six things that can change your life (or someone else’s). Don’t buy into all the doom and gloom. It’s in dark financial days like these that fortunes are made starting with as little as a thousand bucks.

Tread your own path!

Read on to get the full detail. The detail he extrapolates the six points with is really worth the continued reading.

In terms of starting a web-based business, I am going through that very process right now, so stay tuned for updates as I go along… the continued path of my “4 Hour Work Week” journey.

TEMplate – DESIGN your Life! and making it work Sept08

Last week I had the pleasure of co-speaking at the “Figures Fitness for Women” Fund-raising Dinner and Auction Night in Geelong. Not only was the fund-raising very successful for the Geelong Hospital, it was a chance to “launch” the evolving concept of the “ME Inc” workshops to an audience, the majority of whom were very interested in taking the first steps in “DESIGNing your Life! around what you want”. The feedback was most positive, with many receiving the best-selling “Secrets of Inspiring Women Exposed” to assist them in taking their first steps on their way.

“Me Inc” is now the official title of the workshops which will enable, and give permission to entrepreneurial mothers (and fathers!) to take the time out to spend on that business idea, or that plan around combining all that you want and do into DESIGNing your Life! and making it work.

I will let you know when the ME Inc workshop is hitting your part of town, with plans at this stage for the first to commence in Geelong mid-late January 2009. If you think you’d be interested and/or have a group that would benefit from having its own ME Inc workshop, then please reply to this email advising same and we can look at how to do just that.

So… how are you going with the “The Entrepreneurial Mothers Guide to Making Life! Work”? … the ME Inc workshop will be just the thing your need if you’re feeling stuck….

The workshop will be 5 hours (to fit in with school hours), LIVE and interactive to work on “ME Inc” i.e. YOU… you will spend the time, that you never grant yourself, on strategies and tools that you can apply right away.

as always, all suggestions readily accepted
be in touch again soon…

cheers denise

P.S. If you have friends or family or colleagues that you believe would also be interested in this … simply hit the “Forward” button in your email program, send this email and encourage them to contact us!

P.P.S. and/or I would also encourage you to encourage them to “subscribe” at www.theentrepreneurialmother.com.au so that they too can begin their own path of making Life! work and of course, a beautiful relationship with the entrepreneurial mother community.

And for becoming part of the entrepreneurial mother community, they will also receive a soft copy of not only the Denise Hall “Free Agent” chapter from the ” Secrets of Inspiring Women Exposed ” FREE but also access to the story of how Dale Beaumont created the entire Secrets Exposed series, and how successfully it has worked… all they have to do is reply to this email… it couldn’t be simpler
